Mar 18, 2011 · The only thing that can possibly change when you change the outer pinion bearing is pinion bearing preload. With that said, setting pinion preload to be within spec on a Dana 30 or 44 usually winds up needing a shim down to the nearest 0.001". So it's always a scramble to find some combination of shims to get that number.

May 13, 2015 · knock out both races and seal, the tj should use a crush collar, if not then yes u need extra pinion shims for preload.also it takes air pressure and a good gun to crush the collar. reuse the shims that come out. there is probably a oil slinger in there too. it will get damaged. either add shims to take up the difference or put in another ...

Jul 28, 2011 · If you were setting up the gears new, you would set the pinion preload to factory spec. with out the carrier or ring gear in. This preload keeps the pinion bearings tight. Since you are not doing a full gear replacement you will most likely not want to pull the carrier, so the ring gear will remain meshed with the pinion.

Mar 10, 2012 · Bearing is easy to get out. Its the race that can be a pain. Got to drive it out from other side. Which means pulling the carrier. Then you got that crush sleeve and bearing preload to deal with. If you got a service manual its fairly easy. But most times when one bearing goes the other is right behind it as the movement has damaged both.
