The CSE Manual presents 3 systems for referring to references (also known as citations) within the text of a journal article, book, or other scientific publication: (1) citation–sequence, (2) name–year, and (3) citation–name. These abbreviated references are called in-text references.

Name-Year: In-text citations appear in brackets, and consist of the author(s) last name, as well as the document’s year of publication (e.g. Smith 2008). The end reference list appears in alphabetical order by author last name.
