New York Mets starting pitcher Kodai Senga exited Thursday's game against the Washington Nationals in the bottom of the sixth inning after injuring himself while covering first base on a groundout.

Mets starter Kodai Senga was removed in the sixth inning of Thursday’s game against the Nationals at Citi Field with an apparent right hamstring injury. Senga came into that start as the NL leader in earned run average at 1.59, with a 6-3 record and was pitching a shutout.

It was a bittersweet, beautiful afternoon in Queens today, as the Mets rolled to their sixth straight victory, taking down the Nationals 4-3. However, the seemingly easy victory almost came apart in the ninth and the Mets may have lost their ace to injury for an undetermined period of time.

Jeff McNeil doubled home the winning run in the 10th inning and the New York Mets rallied past the Washington Nationals 5-4.

Senga allowed just two base runners in the first 5 1/3 innings before racing to cover first on CJ Abrams’ grounder to Pete Alonso. Senga made a leaping grab of Alonso’s high throw and touched the bag with his right foot on his way down.

The Mets’ third MVP just might be a more anonymous fellow, who’s the leader of baseball’s best and most surprising pitching staff.

The Washington Nationals continue their recent struggles and are now 2-7 in their last nine games. If they lose today, that will be a clean sweep by the New York Mets, which is the Nationals second sweep of the season.
