After revealing in April that she intended to come out of retirement to challenge the UFC 316 title fight winner, Nunes' dance partner was solidified Saturday when Kayla Harrison captured the women's bantamweight title from Julianna Peña at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Nunes retired in June 2023 after beating Irene Aldana to retain the UFC women's bantamweight champion. She vacated the women's bantamweight and women's featherweight titles later that month, the latter of which was removed from circulation.

But now that Nunes is getting ready to resume her career with a showdown against Harrison waiting in the wins, she admits that the potential conflict between them directly led to her decision to leave American Top Team in the first place.
