Editorial: Death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar offers golden opportunity to halt Middle East suffering
Sinwar is widely presumed to be the chief architect of the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas on Israel, images of which are seared forever on our minds and that became a catalyst for more than a year of intensified human suffering in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon and Israel itself.

Israel says its troops in Gaza have killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, a chief architect of the 7 October 2023 attacks and the country's most wanted man. Sinwar disappeared at the start of the war triggered by the unprecedented Hamas attacks, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.
Israel must choose between re-occupying Gaza or offering Palestinians a better future that turns them against Hamas.
