Pray has been privately owned since its 1907 founding by entrepreneur Valentine Eggar, who named the village after former Montana U.S. Sen. Charles Nelson Pray.

The first hour of the race saw athletes from all walks of life, including Matthew Orsburn, the first adaptive athlete to finish the 4.2-mile course.
