Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and legislative leaders announced there will be a one-day special session on Monday to pass the remaining parts of the next two-year budget, ending weeks of limbo in the most closely divided Legislature in state history.

Beyond the regular session May 19 deadline, leaders have missed several self-imposed deadlines for finishing their work: May 26, May 29 and June 4. Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy, DFL-St. Paul, said Wednesday that lawmakers are “making progress — it is as slow as molasses, but molasses is good.”

Legislative leaders continued to say a special session is close on Wednesday afternoon while providing the first update on the situation since last week.
