As SpaceNews reports, the Department of Defense's secretive X-37B craft is slated to do some aerobraking maneuvers while it passes through Earth's upper atmosphere,
Top-secret X-37B space plane ready for daring new orbital maneuver
The Space Force craft will attempt aerobraking for the first time After nearly a year in orbit, the US Space Force's secretive X-37B is prepped to perform some fancy new maneuvers to alter its orbit and dump its service module before carrying on with more mysterious work.
What Is Orbital Maneuvering & Why Is It Important To The US Space Force?
Orbital maneuvering, also known as deep-space maneuvering, enables propulsion systems to alter the spacecraft's orbit. While orbiting space, the intelligence and surveillance systems offer the safety and security of the satellites as well as the potential impact on human life on Earth from falling debris.
USSF Says Boeing-Built X-37B to Perform Aerobraking Maneuvers
The U.S. Space Force and Boeing will work together to enable the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle to perform a series of aerobraking maneuvers to alter its orbit around Earth while using minimal fuel. The Space Force said Thursday the Boeing-built X-37B spacecraft will execute a series of passes using the drag of Earth’s atmosphere to change orbits and safely dispose of its service module in compliance with space debris mitigation standards.
