The Tampa Bay Rays got younger at catcher Monday, using a pair of reported trades to swap Danny Jansen out for Nick Fortes.

TODAY: Both clubs have officially announced the Fortes-for-Etzel trade.

The Miami Marlins have made their first move of the MLB trade deadline, reportedly sending C Nick Fortes to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for OF Matthew Etzel (Tampa Bay’s No. 28 overall prospect).

Shortly after trading former catcher Danny Jansen, the Tampa Bay Rays acquired Nick Fortes from the Miami Marlins to replace him.

The catching shuffle would send Jansen to Milwaukee and bring in a replacement under team control through 2028.

The Marlins acquired Etzel (undisclosed) from the Rays on Monday in exchange for Nick Fortes, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
