Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde called on President Trump to have mercy on transgender children and immigrant families at a National Cathedral prayer service for the inauguration Tuesday, which went viral and prompted the president to call her “nasty in tone” and “not compelling or smart.

But by the next morning, when the National Cathedral held a “Service of Prayer for the Nation,” as it has every four years since Franklin D. Roosevelt’s inauguration in 1933, Trump wasn’t so jazzed with God’s representatives in Washington.

Budde was raised in Morris County by a single mom and a congregation that valued hard work. "I didn't see myself as minister material," she said.
