Having unexpectedly won two Indian state votes late last year, in big part due to a slew of handouts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party is deploying the same playbook in a bid to wrest back Delhi for the first time in nearly three decades next month.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged BJP workers in Delhi to ensure that the party gets 50 per cent votes in every booth in the upcoming assembly elections. Modi, in an online interaction with party workers, said the Aam Aadmi Party was losing ground across the national capital due to its “unfulfilled promises” and “corruption”.

In response, Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said, “AAP leaders, along with several ministers and senior leaders, are sensing defeat. Instead of focusing on contesting the elections together, AAP leaders are preparing to blame their defeat on the BJP and the Election Commission.

The BJP is making all-out efforts to win the assembly polls and return to power after more than 25 years. The party has been in opposition since 1998 and suffered massive defeats at the hands of the AAP in 2015 and 2020 elections.
