The Department of Homeland Security said Friday that it has requested the Pentagon provide thousands of National Guard troops to bolster efforts to remove undocumented migrants from the United States.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has requested 20,000 National Guard troops to help with the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement, a DHS official confirmed to The Hill Thursday.

The Defense Department is reviewing the request. If approved, one official said, it would be the first time National Guard troops were used to help enforce an immigration crackdown in the country.
