The U.S. Supreme Court is set to consider on Tuesday a bid by Christian and Muslim parents in Maryland to keep their elementary school children out of certain classes when storybooks with LGBT characters are read in the latest case involving the intersection of religion and LGBT rights.

Officials from Montgomery County Public Schools ‒ one of the largest and most ethnically diverse districts in the nation ‒ said they introduced a handful of books with LGBTQ+ characters into its elementary school curriculum as part of an effort to better reflect the community.

The Supreme Court is hearing arguments over the religious rights of parents in Maryland to remove their children from elementary school classes using storybooks with LGBTQ characters.
