The week got underway with 243 contestants from all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands.

The best young spellers in the English language are competing at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

This year’s contest celebrates 100 years since the first spelling bee was held on June 17, 1925.
