The Department of the Interior said Monday it is proposing to rescind a rule put in place last year that added new restrictions to development in Alaska's National Petroleum Reserve, a move that would allow drilling and mining in some of the last remaining pristine wilderness in the U.

Trump earlier signed an executive order opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for energy development, continuing a decades-long fight over the land.

The visit comes after Trump signed an executive order earlier this year aimed at boosting oil and gas drilling, mining and logging in Alaska.
