The latest sinkhole on a Morris County interstate, based on preliminary inspections, looks to be caused by an abandoned pipe.

"Some states require that you lay sand in the bottom of the trench when placing natural gas lines," says Bob Wren, training manager, Astec Underground. "It cushions the pipe to prevent damage.

The collapse left the worker trapped. “A person was in the ditch, putting the pipe together, and then the walls of the trench collapsed on him,” Sheriff Lee Foster said," Sheriff Lee Foster said.
