Announcing the $256 million deal, the New York-based biotech firm vowed to comply with 23andMe’s privacy policy, which was a condition of the sale. Genetic data was on the auction block, and a U.S. biotech company ponied up the cash.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals has announced that it will be acquiring human genetics and biotechnology company 23andMe for $256m. The agreement comes two months after 23andMe filed for bankruptcy protection to “facilitate a sale process to maximise the value of its business”.

The sale was for $256 million and is expected to be complete by the third quarter of this year, according to a Regeneron news release. Regeneron’s purchase does not include 23andMe’s Lemonaid Health business.
