Dust carried across the Atlantic is one of the great wonders of the weather world. This is the most significant cloud so far this year.

Every summer, strong winds blow massive clouds of dust off the Sahara Desert in Africa. This is called the Saharan Air Layer, or SAL. These dust clouds ride the wind across the Atlantic Ocean, sometimes traveling more than 5,000 miles all the way to Florida.

Flash flooding in south Florida residents is expected to give way to brilliant sunsets later this week as Saharan dust is forecast to arrive in the state.
