Many Chicagoans were anxious when Mayor Brandon Johnson accepted an invitation to testify Wednesday before U.S. Congress on the city’s sanctuary policy.

Johnson and the other mayors defended their immigration policies, saying they have an obligation to protect everyone living in their cities, regardless of their immigration status.

Mayor Brandon Johnson argued that Chicago’s policies made the city safer and allowed residents to help the police solve crimes without fear of deportation.
