The F80’s V6 engine is sure to upset some purists, but Ferrari insists it offers the best performance of all the options available

Ferrari's latest supercar, the gas-electric hybrid F80, is company’s most powerful road car ever. Only 799 will be built.

This is the new Ferrari F80, and it’s the long-awaited LaFerrari successor which will go head to head with the McLaren W1, and it’s powered by a hybridised V6 engine.

The brakes are all-new, and feature a new CCM-R composite gripped by massive Brembo six-piston calipers on the front axle, while the 20-inch and 21-inch wheels are bespoke carbon-fibre units with five spokes – another first for Ferrari.

The twin-turbo V6 engine is paired with a brand-new 800V hybrid architecture (another first for Ferrari). It all starts with an F1-inspired compact Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic (MGU-K) mounted at the front, which is coupled to the engine with a racing-derived gear set.

The hypercar, of which just 799 will be made, has eye-catching butterfly doors and unique driver-focussed seating, with a passenger most definitely an optional extra.

Ferrari on Thursday unveiled its new limited edition supercar, which incorporates features from Endurance motor competitions and Formula 1 and has already sold out despite its 3.6 million euro ($3.9 million) base price tag.

Just 799 examples will be produced and the car comes with a 3.0-litre V6 powertrain and will rival the recently revealed McLaren W1.
