The mound stood as an island in Glacial Lake Wisconsin, a 70-mile-long, 160-feet-deep lake that formed when ice near the Wisconsin Dells blocked glacial water from draining down the Wisconsin River.
The park’s sandstone buttes were islands in Glacial Lake Wisconsin during the Ice Age, 12,000 plus years ago. Mill Bluff is one of nine units of the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve.
