Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said her department is likely to begin taking special accounting maneuvers sometime in mid-January to avoid breaching the U.S. debt limit.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned Congress that the country could hit the debt ceiling as soon as Jan. 14 in a letter sent Friday.

In a letter sent to congressional leaders on Friday, Yellen explained that the Treasury expects to reach the statutory debt ceiling between January 14 and January 23, 2025. Once this limit is reached, the department will deploy special accounting measures to avoid breaching the debt ceiling.
