A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Sunday near Tonga, a nation of more than 170 islands in the South Pacific Ocean.
There are hopes that a formal meeting of journalists from Tonga and Papua New Guinea last week will lead to the development of a collective media voice in the Pacific.
Tonga was jolted in the early hours of Monday- local time- after a powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck just over 60 miles northeast of the island, triggering fears of a possible tsunami threat along the region’s coastlines.
The Tonga Meteorological Services told residents in the risk area to evacuate inland to high ground, three-story solid buildings or tsunami evacuation sites.
