On the other hand, a protesting doctor on hunger strike, Anustup Mukhopadhyay was admitted to Kolkata Medical College after he complained of severe stomach pain. Treating doctor said that though Anustup’s condition is stable, he will be monitored in CCU for the next couple of days.

The assault has cast doubts on the West Bengal Government’s claims of having strengthened security measures in hospitals after the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

The Hospital official said a relative of another patient was also beaten up by the gang members who used hockey sticks, rods and steel chains during the attack.

Hospital sources said Sourav Modak is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition. He sustained serious injuries to his head, face, legs, and wrists, and several bones in his arms and legs were broken.

Eyewitnesses also claimed that while the vandalism continued for some time, the police personnel present within the hospital premises stood there as mute spectators.
