U.S. officials say Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the Navy to rename the USNS Harvey Milk in a highly rare move.

There is a list of other possible name changes of ships named after prominent women and civil rights leaders, a U.S. official who was not authorized to speak publicly tells NPR.

The former Navy officer, who resigned over questions surrounding his sexuality in 1955, is having his naval recognition revoked under new Pentagon leadership.
