The cold weather rolling in Tuesday night means homeless shelters are scrambling to make room for an influx of people looking to stay warm. The front also arrives at the same time that a new state law goes into full effect.

As rain and cold mixed Thursday night, the city of Austin says 423 people chose to utilize the city's overnight cold weather shelters.

The shelter, at 3230 Brick Church Pike, will open at 4 p.m. and close at 10 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Salvation Army, located at 417 Rutherford Road in Greenville, opens its cold-weather shelter when overnight temperatures drop below 40 degrees. City of Houston has extended overflow shelter hours to protect people from the elements as another round of bad weather rolls through Houston. As cold temperatures and heavy rain hit the area, overflow shelter facilities will remain open overnight to provide shelter to those in need.

Today is a FOX 26 Storm Alert Day in southeast Texas. Heavy rain will begin to move in midday with the heaviest rain expected later this afternoon into the evening. Models are showing 2 to 4 inches of rain possible in total and the highest amounts will likely be close to the coast.
