California said on Tuesday it has withdrawn its request for a federal waiver to require commercial truckers to transition to zero-emissions vehicles, preempting an expected denial from the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump.

State regulators said the measures would probably have been rejected by the Trump administration and that they would focus on homegrown legal strategies instead.

California clean-air regulators withdrew requests with the Biden administration to set tougher pollution rules in the state for heavy-duty trucks, locomotives and ocean-going ships that were likely to be denied under President-elect Donald Trump.

Because Trump is unlikely to approve them, California has no choice but to abandon its groundbreaking rules for zero-emission trucks and cleaner locomotives.
