Anxious evacuees who live near Hurricane Milton’s landfall returned home Friday to find out if they faced more destruction or miracles on the barrier islands of Sarasota County.

Hurricane Milton made landfall on Siesta Key on the Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday night as a major Category 3 hurricane with 120 mph winds as the state has endured an assault of nearly 120 tornado warnings throughout the day.

Milton spread destruction across Florida overnight, whipping up tornadoes in areas not accustomed to such ferocity and cutting power for more than 3.3 million energy customers. The storm killed at least 12 people and put 11 million at risk of flooding.
