A Texas House committee has approved legislation that would preserve the state’s lottery while dissolving the Texas Lottery Commission, shifting oversight to a new regulatory structure amid ongoing controversy and investigations.

State Rep. Charlie Geren, the Fort Worth Republican carrying the House's version of Senate Bill 3070, said the legislation is an alternative to abolishing the 33-year-old lottery and offers it a chance of rehabilitation.

The Texas Senate voted unanimously on Thursday to overhaul the state's lottery system, passing legislation that dismantles the Texas Lottery Commission and shifts oversight to a different state agency,
